Beginning tomorrow, representatives from more than 190 countries will gather in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The goal of the long-awaited talks (which will continue through December 18) is to outline and agree upon a robust treaty to curb emissions of global greenhouse gases.
Counting down to the start of the summit, a group of 60 artists and activists from around the world released a new version of Midnight Oil’s 1988 hit, “Beds Are Burning,” in early October. The original song was a political statement about returning land to Australia’s native people, now rewritten by Midnight Oil to address the climate crisis: “The time has come / A fact’s a fact / The heat is on / No turning back.”
Some of the folks taking part in what’s termed the “TckTckTck” effort include former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, The All-American Rejects, Lily Allen, Marion Cotillard, Jamie Cullum, Duran Duran, Fergie, Milla Jovovich, Mark Ronson, and Bishop Desmond Tutu. The backing beat is slowed down considerably from the original, and with subject matter as heavy as this, the resulting track slogs along, all too often the case with group-sung charity singles. (Note to the future: All I am saying is we don’t need another version of “Give Peace A Chance.”)
Still, even if this new version of “Beds Are Burning” isn’t so hot, every (free!) download of the single and/or viewing of the video counts towards the TckTckTck campaign’s global musical petition, a unique way to show political leaders attending the Copenhagen conference that the time has come to join together and take real, bold action to positively impact global climate change. That’s a pretty easy way to be sure your name is counted among those who can’t stand the heat:
