Just the other day, my mind wandered to Natasha Bedingfield — I must have heard “Unwritten” or “Pocketful Of Sunshine” playing overhead somewhere — and I thought to myself that nothing the British singer-songwriter has sung has ever really grabbed me. Aside from the Moto Blanco remix of “Angel,” which is outstanding, I’ve found Bedingfield’s original tunes to be as substantive as air, playing well under rom-com trailers and as aural wallpaper in retail establishments.
I’ve also never been a fan of Fragma’s “Toca’s Miracle,” which was inescapable in the spring and summer of 2000 to anyone on or near a dancefloor. I didn’t really care for Coco Starr’s vocals (originally from 1997’s “I Need A Miracle”), and found the track too trance-y for my tastes.
How are the two related? Well, Canadian production duo The Dirty Tees have teamed with Natasha Bedingfield (whose “Touch” they remixed last year), to cover Fragma’s “Toca’s Miracle.” Really, it’s a cover of Coco Starr’s “I Need A Miracle,” but Fragma made it famous by adding her original vocal to their own “Toca Me” instrumental, resulting in the 2000 hit.
A decade later, The Dirty Tees’ new combo is, surprisingly, music to my ears. Plus, it’s a free download. Hear here:
