Nite Jewel‘s cover of Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” is a few months old, having arrived late last year. The Los Angeles lo-fi musician (aka Ramona Gonzalez) reportedly recorded the song for the German edition of Rolling Stone, though I’ve no idea what inspired her to pick this particular track.
Co-written by James Ingram and the song’s producer, Quincy Jones, “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” was released in September 1983 as the sixth single and consecutive top 10 hit from the mega-selling Thriller. Michael’s sisters La Toya and Janet are among the ladies providing the song’s “na-na-na” background vocals.
True to her name, Nite Jewel covers “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” as a slow jam primed to shine long after the sun’s gone down. Draw the bedroom curtains closed and dim the lights to make it right. Nite Jewel’s gonna help you take it to the max.
“P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” actually started as an entirely different song, written by Michael himself. In 2008, that original demo was remixed by will.i.am for Thriller 25, the 25th anniversary edition of the landmark album.
