The Dream Academy covers The Smiths

Though it’s been just two weeks since Morrissey was the subject of a Sunday Cover Story, I caught Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on cable yesterday, and was reminded of a lovely cover of The Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” included in the film.

An instrumental version by The Dream Academy plays over the scene at The Art Institute of Chicago, as Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane view several major works, including pieces by Hopper, Chagall, and Seurat. (Refresh your memory of the montage, helpfully recreated here.)

The Dream Academy recorded “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” in 1984, during sessions that resulted in its self-titled debut, The Dream Academy (which birthed their best-known track, the #7 hit, “Life In A Northern Town”). The Smiths cover didn’t make the cut, though it was one of four tracks featured on a video compilation issued by their label, Warner Brothers.

In the UK, “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” was released as a single. Hear here:

A second track from The Dream Academy, “The Edge Of Forever,” also plays during Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but writer/director John Hughes reportedly didn’t feel the film’s songs would flow as an album, so no soundtrack was ever released. Because of the big-screen exposure, Yello’s “Oh Yeah” and The Beatles’ “Twist And Shout” were, however, issued (reissued, in the latter’s case) as singles by their respective labels.

Nearly a decade would pass before The Dream Academy’s cover of “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” was commercially available in the States, unexpectedly popping up on the 1995 compilation, Sedated In The Eighties, Vol. 4.

Other artists that have since tackled this particular Smiths’ track include the Deftones, Elefant, and Hootie & The Blowfish (eek!), all readily available from your favorite download service. Alas, The Dream Academy version once again proves elusive, as the Sedated In The Eighties series is now out of print. So get out your wallet if you’d like to add this cover version to your collection.

The Dream Academy’s cover of “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” which appears on Sedated In The Eighties, Vol. 4, can be yours via resellers on Amazon and eBay.
