I have zero shame regarding just how much I love The Carrie Diaries, the Sex And The City prequel currently in its second season on The CW.
While I love original-flavor SATC, recently rewatching all 94 episodes over a few weeks this summer (thanks, HBO GO!), this child of the ’80s enjoys revisiting the fashion and music of the Me Decade every week through the adventures of a teenage Carrie Bradshaw and her crew. Sure, the timeline doesn’t really match up with SATC and yes, the clothing isn’t crazily accurate, but close enough counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and The Carrie Diaries.
With The O.C. music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas pitching in on The Carrie Diaries, it’s no surprise to hear some new covers of ’80s songs alongside classic hits from the era. This past week’s episode, “The Safety Dance,” featured a cover of Men Without Hats’ 1983 hit from Sleeping At Last.
But don’t go putting your dancing shoes on. Sleeping At Last’s Ryan O’Neal wasn’t contracted by Patasavas’ team for a carbon-copy take that will having you act like an imbecile. Rather, O’Neal’s contemplative acoustic cover scored a melancholic moment on The Carrie Diaries. Typical teenage drama.
The Carrie Diaries is no ratings blockbuster, so a third-season renewal is far from guaranteed (maybe some vampires should take Manhattan). But the first season is streaming on Netflix now, so check out an episode or two and see if you don’t fall for the younger, wide-eyed Carrie.
