Stumbleine‘s new cover of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” hews closely to the original 1994 gauzy alt-rock ballad. But remaining true to such gorgeous source material is by no means a bad thing, as it leads to similarly dreamy results for the Bristol, UK-based chillwave producer.
Playing Hope Sandoval to his David Roback is Los Angeles singer-songwriter Steffaloo, who offers a simple explanation for how their collaboration came to be. Disclaimed with a super-sized [sic]: “i love stumbleine. i love doing old 90’s pop covers. thus, this cover of mazzy star’s fade into you came into being.”
If only all of life were so simple.

Earlier this month at a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina, Kelly Clarkson covered “Fade Into You” by fan request, saying “I know you all have these, your repeat songs that you just listen to hypnotically on repeat, over and over and over. This is that song for me.”
Mazzy Star returned last October with a new single, “Common Burn”/“Lay Myself Down,” and toured this year. A new album from the reunited duo, their first since 1996’s Among My Swan, has been reportedly in the works as well. With “Fade Into You” having a moment, it would be wise for Sandoval and Roback to get their new music out soon.
