Tennis covers Broadcast

Somewhat oddly for a band so named, but Tennis must feel three is preferable to two.

After releasing their debut album, Cape Dory, in February, the Denver-based husband-and-wife duo of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore became a trio this year with the addition of James Barone. Now, after serving up covers of Brenda Lee’s “Is It True” and The Zombies’ “Tell Her No,” the band has taken on someone else’s song for the third time in 2011. There is a notable shift from that pair, however. Tennis has jumped from mid-Sixties’ inspiration to a tune of more recent vintage, British band Broadcast‘s “Tears In The Typing Pool,” from 2005’s Tender Buttons.

Broadcast frontwoman Trish Keenan died on January 14, after contracting pneumonia following the band’s Australian tour in December. “Broadcast has been a huge influence in our band from day one,” said Tennis in an email/blog post announcing the band’s latest cover. “Bassist James Cargill and drummer Steve Perkins create, in our minds, an infinity of space that very few bands can claim. The arrangement of tones and instruments put Trish Keenan’s voice just where it needs to be. Hopefully this homage of ours makes sense as Keenan will be sorely missed.”

Tennis’ sophomore LP, Young And Old, produced by the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, arrives February 13. First single, “Origins,” is out now, with a music video for the B-side, “Out In The Woods” available for viewing.

And while Trish Keenan may have passed, we haven’t heard the last of Broadcast. Though no date has been set for its release, Keenan’s bandmate James Cargill is reportedly working on a new album based on vocals the singer recorded before her death.
