To celebrate Doc Martens’ 50th anniversary, ten artists were each asked to cover a song representing the spirit of the iconic footwear label’s long history, with matching music videos made by ten directors.
Danish noise-pop duo The Raveonettes serve up the eighth entry in the series, recording The Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored.” The psychedelic-tinged 1989 original is a classic anthem from the Madchester era of British music, a tune that Sharin Foo (the female half of The Raveonettes) describes as “so super-cool.”
Well, I think The Raveonettes are pretty cool cats too, so hearing Foo’s voice try on the hazy swirl of “I Wanna Be Adored” is a real aural treat. Choosing to re-record such an iconic track, it’s really Foo’s performance that elevates this cover from slavish copy to standout take. Just take a listen to her acapella vocal at the start of this making-of video; I bet you’d sell your soul to her if she asked:
And here’s The Raveonettes’ finished recording, accompanied by a video collaboration between Cass Bird and Molly Schiot. I’m not sure what’s going on in the clip, a story that involves an old woman, a younger lady, an animated cigarette pack, fake fishing, and tearing into a roast duck on a picnic blanket:
