Whether you celebrated Halloween by heading out in costume or happened to have the radio on at some point yesterday, you’ve probably had your yearly fill of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
But although the calendar now officially reads November, in keeping with the spirit of the recently departed holiday, let’s pretend that some cosmic stutter (somehow related to Daylight Saving Time?) has caused the midnight hour to be close at hand again. English singer-songwriter Imogen Heap recently treated BBC Radio 2 listeners to a well-timed cover of “Thriller” that more than does the trick.
A lifelong fan who credits Jackson for inspiring her to use made-up language and incorporate breaths in her own melodies, Heap’s brilliant take on “Thriller” must be heard. Accompanying herself on solo piano and stripping the song of any camp (no ghostly sound effects, no Vincent Price rap cameo), Heap heightens the total creepiness of the song. It’s really no stretch to say that “Thriller” hasn’t sounded this fresh since it was first released, over 25 years ago:
Heap’s “Thriller” performance has been warmly received by folks from all over, and no less than the tune’s songwriter has weighed in with praise, news she excitedly shared via Twitter:
“Can’t believe the heat from Thriller cover. Rod Temperton himself (who wrote it) has even been in contact and wants to meet up. Amazing ha?”
Though Heap’s cover of “Thriller” isn’t commercially available (yet), consider checking out her latest album, Ellipse, out now. Next week, she begins a month-long mini-tour of the States, with a longer visit planned for next year.
