Twin Shadow launched his Under The Cvrs series in August with 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love,” and in September pressed record on a rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.”
Now for October’s edition, George Lewis Jr. has covered Tori Amos’ “Silent All These Years,” a selection that’s noteworthy for at least two reasons.
First, Amos’ songs aren’t really covered all that much, probably owing to their close personal connection to the flame-haired pianist (these aren’t necessarily stories made for another musician’s mouth). And second, Amos herself has covered both “I’m Not In Love” (on 2001’s Strange Little Girls) and “I’m On Fire” (both on tour and for VH1 Crossroads). The first time I ever saw Amos, in 1994, she opened with that bit of The Boss, and her cover of “I’m On Fire” remains one of my all-time favorites.
Singing “Silent All These Years” on piano with few effects, Twin Shadow treats Amos’ signature song with near-absolute reverence. But really, that’s just how it should be. Lewis’ cover proves the song remains just as powerful after (yes) all these years.
Twin Shadow worked with HAIM during the sessions for their debut album, Days Are Gone, co-writing and producing “Edge,” a bonus track included on the deluxe edition issued in the UK.
