On Business Casual, their first release in three years, Berkeley-born, New York-based trio We Are Scientists close out the EP with a cover of Berlin’s “Take Your Breath Away.”
Co-written by Giorgio Moroder, the 1986 #1 ballad from the Top Gun soundtrack took home the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Original Song. While “Take Your Breath Away” touched down for a single week at #1 in the U.S., Terri Nunn’s vocals soared at the top of the UK singles chart for four weeks straight, a run that began 27 years ago this week.
We Are Scientists climb into Maverick’s cockpit, packing a pedal-steel guitar for a surprising countrified take on “Take My Breath Away.”
Moroder originally enlisted The Motels’ Martha Davis to sing on the demo of “Take My Breath Away,” which you can hear here. Nunn and Moroder have also shared their memories of recording the song and its Oscar win.
