A retro-soul ‘Grabber’

March 10, 2011 0 Comments

Fitz & The Tantrums may be pulling up the rear on the retro-soul train, but even after making stops for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Mayer Hawthorne, and Melanie Fiona over the last few years, the movement hasn’t run out of steam yet.

The L.A. six-piece, which famously features not a single guitar, released their debut EP, Songs For A Breakup Vol. 1, in 2009. Fitz & The Tantrums’ full-length follow-up, Pickin’ Up The Pieces, arrived this January. Like their fellow musician-passengers, Fitz & The Tantrums can’t forget the Motor City. “MoneyGrabber,” with its spot-on Funk Brothers rhythm, proves these soulsters aren’t pretenders, they know their Motown history. And judging by the song’s start, Fitz & The Tantrums equally dig “Downtown.” Founded upon such classic pop sounds, there’s a reason why this modern-day revival keeps a-rolling.

Fitz & The Tantrums carry their retro aesthetic through to the red-and-blue hued “MoneyGrabber” video. Co-vocalists Michael Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs make quite the complementary pair:
