Even if you’ve seen actress Alicia Witt on television or in film only a handful of times, odds are good that one of those characters played the piano.
A classically trained pianist, Witt’s talent has proved irresistible to writers who’ve learned of it (and made a casting director’s job a thousand times easier). Most memorably for me, Witt tickled the ivories several times on Cybill, the mid-’90s sitcom in which she starred opposite Cybill Shepherd and Christine Baranski.
Only in recent years has Witt directed attention to writing and performing her own songs. She released a self-titled EP in 2009 and issued an album last year, Live At Rockwood. Now Witt’s original material is getting some screen time, appearing in two films in which she also stars, Pasadena and I Do.
Witt co-wrote the end credits theme for Pasadena with Ben Folds, a production that harkens back to Bacharach-David lushness.

Witt’s other new film, I Do, features two of her songs, including a studio version of “Do It” (originally from Live At Rockwood).

To celebrate the release of I Do in theaters (and on iTunes and Amazon), Witt asked Brad Walsh to remix “Do It.” The song’s theme of self-actualization is prime club fodder, and Walsh reworks “Do It” into a perfect pop-dance anthem.
If the right folks are paying attention, “Do It” should be blaring from speakers at many a Pride-related event this month and throughout the rest of the summer.
