With new studio albums expected later this year from Garbage and No Doubt, both previously on long hiatuses, I hope their return spurs a renaissance of the female-fronted rock band.
One early entry to that future new class is The Finger, a five-piece from Thessaloniki, Greece, who recently released their debut single, “Die! Die Superhero!”.
Frontwoman Hypnelia sounds a little like Shirley Manson when she lets loose, singing atop a driving beat and swirling guitars. Throwing in a cooly voiced “motherfucker” in the second verse, she gives The Finger’s sugary melodies a mischievous dash of spice. You know, in case you completely missed the bit in the chorus about Hypnelia flipping the bird.
Sounds like I’ve got a new favorite band to help fill the void left by Shirley, Gwen, and their men while awaiting their new material:
The Finger’s full-length debut is on deck for September.
