By posting this, I’m risking the wrath of Bears fans I left behind in Chicago, but this has little to do with hometown loyalty and everything to do with the man behind the music.
Super-producer Butch Vig, known for his work behind the boards on such classic albums as Nirvana’s Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream, as well as being one quarter of one of my favorite bands ever, Garbage, grew up in Wisconsin. So it’s not surprising that Vig has some affinity for the Green Bay Packers (though his mom was a Minnesota Vikings fan).
After a Garbage/No Doubt gig a few years ago, Vig decided to record a new version of “Go! You Packers! Go!,” the NFL team’s fight song. (The title reads like something of an insult, come to think of it. Maybe that’ll appease my still-smarting Bears backers.) He corralled members of both bands in an arena locker room, plus whomever was wandering around, and recorded chants of “Go Pack Go!” for the Green Bay update.
Back in the studio, Vig handled drums and DJ scratching, joined by Garbage bassist Duke Erikson and the band’s guitar tech, Chad Zaemish, on guitar and lead vocals. Calling themselves the 6 Packers, this is the arena-ready “Go Pack Go!,” their first and only release:
If other team themes had this sort of pedigree and sounded this good, I might actually care a smite more for sports.
