If you’re a Duran Duran fan, then you probably know what a “Night Version” is. And if you’re not, or don’t, Night Versions are what the band, in their early days, dubbed their songs’ extended versions, as they were intended to be played in nightclubs. There are Night Versions of “Planet Earth,” “Girls On Film,” “My Own Way,” “Hungry Like The Wolf,” and others.
While issuing special club mixes wasn’t an original idea, Duran Duran did something different than their peers by returning to the studio to record these extended takes. Rather than simply having the track remixed from existing master tapes, the band would take it from the top, lengthening the song with instrumental breaks and additional passages.
With Duran Duran revisiting Rio-era sounds on their new Mark Ronson-produced album, All You Need Is Now, the band issued a new Night Version on Wednesday in honor of Duran Duran Appreciation Day. Not surprisingly, it was Ronson’s idea, according to bassist John Taylor:
“‘Other People’s Lives’ is one of the songs I enjoy most off the latest album, and one I have been looking forward to making an extended dance version of since it was first recorded. This version was cut, edited and extended at our London studio in June ’11 with engineer Josh at the controls. Mark Ronson thought it was about time we had a Night Version again so here it is. We hope you’ll get a kick out of it.”
I definitely did, and think you will too.
