Wrapping up my Top 100 Tracks of 2010, I mentioned that 2011 is set to bring a bumper crop of pop, with much anticipated releases from Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and other big names coming soon-ish. But my quick New Year’s Eve accounting (which I wish I could blame on too much champagne) neglected to include one fella whose sophomore effort I’m very much looking forward to, Frankmusik.
Last month, the L.A.-based British electro artist/producer issued “The Fear Inside,” the first single from Do It In the AM. The album has no firm release date as yet, but Frankmusik is kicking off the year by taking a page from Kanye West. In the past three days, he’s given away two free tracks, “Hurt You Again” and “Warrior,” via Twitter (@Frankmusik), where he’s put his account on “LOCK DOWN.” Besides the link to freefrankmusik.com, he’s been communicating only via digits — so very mysterious! (or not).
“Hurt You Again” is moody pop that becomes crushing drama in the chorus:
Today, “Hurt You Again” was replaced by the second tune, “Warrior,” which unfortunately, isn’t a cover of Scandal’s 1984 hit. (How awesome would that have been?) It is, however, a beautiful piano ballad. (Win some, lose some.) Grab “Warrior” now before it’s gone.
The two tracks Frankmusik has posted thus far aren’t set to appear on Do It In The AM, so maybe this is just a decks-clearing exercise prior to promoting the album in full. Fine by me. The more we hear from Frankmusik, the better, and I’ll gladly take it while he’s giving it.
