If you happened to catch Lady GaGa’s Fame Ball tour in recent weeks, then you might have been exposed to the musical lessons of opening act Chester French.
Maxwell Drummey and D.A. Wallach met as freshmen at Harvard in 2003, took their name from sculptor Daniel Chester French — who designed the Lincoln Memorial and this Chicago landmark — and started chipping away at sounds both retro and modern to craft something original.
Though their dorm-room demos didn’t grab the attention of any rock labels, the duo’s sonic aesthetic did catch the ears of hip-hop moguls Jermaine Dupri and Pharrell Williams. The subject of a post-graduation bidding war between the two big-name producers, Chester French signed to Williams’ Star Trak label in 2007. The fruits of their Ivy League labors, debut album Love The Future, came out a week ago.
The video to first single, “She Loves Everybody,” plays visually as less love and more outright abuse. It’s a little disturbing, actually, but the song is brilliant:
Amazon MP3 is offering a free download of “She Loves Everybody” this week. And the Chester French fellas have something even more attractive, a free mixtape, Jacques Jams Vol. 1: Endurance, which sports guest shots from Pharrell, Common, Lady GaGa, Solange, Janelle Monae, and more.
