Gemini Club’s Twin Spin

March 12, 2012 1 Comment

Well, this is exciting.

Gemini Club is an electropop trio that hails from Chicago. As a still-devoted former denizen of the Windy City, I’ll cop to approaching the band’s music with some bias — and big-shouldered expectations — knowing that two of my very favorite things have been twinned. But personal predilections aside, Dan Brunelle, Tom Gavin, and Gordon Bramli really do deliver the goods.

The strong four-on-the-floor beat of “By Surprise,” taken from Gemini Club’s forthcoming EP, Here We Sit, mixes Calvin Harris trance pop with OneRepublic piano rock. A little “Lucky Star” synth sparkle is sprinkled atop the whole thing, while Ghost Town DJs’ “My Boo” peeks from under the second verse. And in the song’s mid-section, things get terrifically blippy:

Like the astrological sign from which they take their name, Gemini Club is a multi-dimensional band, but in a completely positive way. Another track from Here We Sit, “Can’t Believe You Said That,” takes things in a buzzy indie-pop direction that’s no less amazing in its execution. The last minute transports the song inside a fierce game of Asteroids.

Gemini Club performs several shows at SXSW this week, and is also currently competing in Billboard’s Battle Of The Bands.

Here We Sit, out April 17, is available for pre-order here.
