Here Come The ‘Girls’

After making a name for himself on the remix scene, beginning with bootlegs before going legit with re-dos for artists from La Roux to Lady Gaga, now Doctor Rosen Rosen is applying his knack for sticky melodies and catchy beats by working on original tunes for major-label artists.

Not content to do all that knob-twiddling behind the scenes, Doctor Rosen Rosen steps out under his own name with GIRLS, a series of four EPs featuring up-and-coming female vocalists to be released over the next year. GIRLS: VOLUME 1 finds the producer collaborating with Jessie & The Toy Boys, Meg Myers, Kay, and Anjulie. But don’t think Doctor Rosen Rosen has left his rogue-pop past behind, as he’s making the whole shebang available for free.

With tunes on GIRLS: VOLUME 1 inspired by The Cure’s “Lullaby” (“Poison”) and Prince’s work with Apollonia, Vanity 6, and Sheila E. (“Five O’Clock”), my fave of the four is “Sex-Ed,” featuring Anjulie. “‘Sex-Ed’ pays tribute to some of my favorite 80s female artists like Madonna, Janet Jackson, Taylor Dayne and Pebbles,” says Doctor Rosen Rosen. “Before Anjulie arrived for our session, I came up with the pre-chorus, knowing that she and I would have a lot of fun creating the rest of the song. Sure enough, she jumped in and we took it to the next level.”
