If the bridge of Britney Spears‘ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” served as your toe-dip into dubstep earlier this week, dive a bit deeper with a better example of the electronic dance genre that got its start in the UK.
“Shot Yourself In The Foot Again,” just released today in a bit of perfect timing, comes straight from the source. It’s a collaboration between Skream, one of dubstep’s earliest purveyors and most prominent producers, and London singer/rapper Example, whose infectious single, “Kickstarts,” placed in my Top Tracks of 2010.
Now I never could quite wrap my head around drum and bass or 2-step/garage — or more specifically, figure out what to do with my feet — two UK dance forms from which dubstep rose. Marked by exaggerated, often stuttering sub-bass, with rhythms that typically depart from a four-on-the-floor beat, dubstep can similarly make it difficult to find one’s footing.
But when a big-named pop artist like Britney Spears brings dubstep into the mainstream, it’s worth knowing more about it. Skream and Example bridge enough of the two worlds in “Shot Yourself In The Foot Again” so newcomers to the genre don’t feel like total aliens (two four-on-the-floor moments, for one). Plus, it’s a free download, so give it a spin a few times through and see if it takes hold. It’s definitely done the trick for me.
And be sure to let me know if you also think that Example sounds like Coldplay’s Chris Martin on what passes for the chorus. Example also directed the video, a good reminder not to ignore your phone when out gallivanting with the boys:
If you’re not following Example on Twitter (@example), you’re missing out on one of the most entertaining feeds out there. Of course, by comparing him to Chris Martin, I’ve probably just set myself up for a retort of some sort.
