Lane 8’s Wall Of Sound

May 7, 2013 0 Comments

Tracy Chapman’s eponymous debut turned 25 last month. For my money, her 1988 arrival still remains one of the best-ever freshman sets in the history of music.

While I’m aware of no celebration marking the album’s silver anniversary, and this is probably mere coincidence, San Francisco’s Lane 8 (aka Daniel Goldstein) has sampled Tracy Chapman‘s haunting acapella track, “Behind The Wall”, to create his new track “Sleepless,” adding bits from Snowden’s “So Red” and Depeche Mode’s “Halo.”

Chapman’s unmistakable tone slides into the groove better than one might have expected.

It’s been a while since I caught up with Lane 8’s work. Among his more recent offerings, don’t miss “Every Night,” which samples Diana Ross & The Supremes’ “Reflections.”
