Saying she wasn’t a fan of “groovy modern Christmas records,” Aimee Mann issued One More Drifter In The Snow in 2006.
Inspired by classic holiday albums from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Johnny Mathis (Mann counts his Merry Christmas as her favorite), One More Drifter does include several oft-tread tunes. But in the hands of Mann and producer Paul Bryan, these chestnuts (“The Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “White Christmas,” among them) are given casual, gather-around-the-fireplace arrangements.
Departing from such usual Christmas fare, “Whatever Happened To Christmas” is a Jimmy Webb tune recorded by Sinatra in 1968 (and not many others), while “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” sports a vocal assist from Grant Lee Phillips. Two originals round out the package: “Calling On Mary” (written by Mann and Bryan) and “Christmastime,” written by Michael Penn, Mann’s musician husband. The couple first recorded “Christmastime” together for the 1996 Just Say Noel various artists collection.
One More Drifter In The Snow is a keeper. If you’re a fan of Aimee Mann, you know exactly what you’re gonna get, even with the holiday wrapping.
