O Christmas Free: Tony Bennett, Harry Connick, Jr.

November 29, 2008 0 Comments

Earlier this week, iTunes flipped the switch on its Holiday Store. Seasonal treats in music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, podcasts, and even holiday apps for your iPhone or iPod Touch can be found in this one-stop Christmas shop.

Like last year, the iTunes’ Free Single of the Week will be similarly themed all month long. First up, Tony Bennett‘s “Winter Wonderland,” taken from A Swingin’ Christmas. Recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra, Bennett’s first new holiday album in 40 years proves the 82-year old singer is still a master of phrasing. His smooth delivery has an inherent warmth and smile, well suited for Christmas songs. (Though re-recorded for A Swingin’ Christmas, Bennett’s original version of “My Favorite Things” remains one of mine.)

But the free music doesn’t stop there, as iTunes announced that its weekly free Discovery Download will also be decked out in December.

First out of the winter makeover gate is Harry Connick, Jr., who’s dropped his third Christmas disc, What A Night!. The apropos “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” is the featured freebie.

It’s clear Connick’s label hopes What A Night! is a successful outing, having pimped out this very same track for Oprah’s free Holiday Hits 2008. But as that 48-hour offer has come and gone, you’ve got a second chance, George Bailey, to add this track to your O Christmas Free collection.
