If robo-pop is a genre, then LectroLips are the masters, hands down. If not, then Leo Tarring and Antony Edwards deserve credit for creating one where none previously existed.
Since 2009, the UK duo has been perfecting their unique sound — processed vocals (often sung, sometimes spoken, occasionally rapped) over a tasty melange of electro, dance, and ’80s pop topped by a touch of sleaze. Subtract the R&B from Chromeo, throw George Michael’s falsetto through a filter, turn up the tempo, and let LectroLips’ music play.
Making their Popservations debut, LectroLips’ latest offering, “Resurrection,” caught my ear because it’s something of a departure from their previous tunes. The vocal effects remain (the stutter is particularly effective), but the track is accentuated by dark synth stabs that recall Faithless’ rave/house stomper “Insomnia,” presenting a heftier, clubbier side of the duo.
Reviving classic sounds with a twist isn’t new for LectroLips, but “Resurrection” is such a tight, fully realized production that I can’t help but hear it as Leo and Ant’s rebirth.
