Today when Stereogum posted a new song from Juliana Hatfield, “There’s Always Another Girl (For Lindsay Lohan),” I assumed it was a message to the actress not to get too down about her recent breakup with Samantha Ronson. Because there’d surely be another girlfriend down the road, you see.
But the parenthetical wasn’t part of the title, just a dedication to the occasionally troubled star. Rather, “There’s Always Another Girl” is Hatfield’s commentary on the harsh treatment of women in the entertainment industry versus men. “It’s so gross and nasty for people to be watching and waiting and almost cheerleading for Lindsay to relapse, or get in a car crash or whatever. Horrible.”
Though only a demo (double-tracked vocals and guitar), Hatfield’s message is pretty potent even in this spare form: “Boy geniuses can be ugly and fat, but they don’t cut their girls any slack […] Don’t you love it when a beautiful woman self-destructs?”
