On this date in 1997, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley drowned near Memphis, Tennessee. Just 30 years old, he had a single studio album to his credit, 1994’s Grace.
Numerous recordings have been issued in the years since his death, including two discs’ worth of tracks and demos recorded for his unfinished second album, My Sweetheart The Drunk. Beyond that, many of these posthumous releases have been culled from tapes of his club and concert appearances. The newest of these, Grace Around The World, which features live versions of the songs on Grace, will be released next Tuesday.
Though I’m by no means a Buckley fanatic (my familiarity with his work is cursory at best), “Last Goodbye” (from Grace) grabbed me from the first moment I heard it. It reached #19 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart on May 6, 1995:
