Thirty years ago this week, Patti Austin and James Ingram were enjoying each others’ company for a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100 with “Baby, Come To Me.”
Written by Rod Temperton (“Rock With You,” “Yah Mo B There”) and produced by Quincy Jones for Austin’s 1981 album, Every Home Should Have One, “Baby, Come To Me” was first released as a single in the spring of 1982. There were few takers for the duet, and the song peaked at #73.
But a few months later, “Baby, Come To Me” was picked to soundtrack the soap-opera love story of Luke and Laura on ABC’s General Hospital. The fictional couples’ popularity with viewers led to requests for the song, which was re-released in October and soon became the number-one hit we remember it as today.
Following the success of “Baby, Come To Me,” a second existing Austin and Ingram team-up was released as a single. “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?” was recorded for the 1982 film Best Friends and peaked at #45 in July 1983. Austin and Ingram did score better on the Adult Contemporary chart, with the music playing them all the way to #5.
