Just hours after Lady Gaga’s American Idol performance on Wednesday — how fantastic was that bubble piano? — the pop star had another reason to celebrate. Her second single, “Poker Face,” reached the summit of the Billboard Hot 100, following in the footsteps of “Just Dance” (which spent three weeks at #1 in January).
With “Poker Face” also drawing aces, Lady Gaga joins an exclusive quartet of female artists in the past 25 years who’ve had consecutive #1s on their first two tries. Christina Aguilera achieved the feat nearly a decade ago with the double-shot of “Genie In A Bottle” and “What A Girl Wants.” Mariah Carey, however, remains the indisputable debut #1 champ, having scaled the summit with her first five (!) singles out of the gate.
The remaining female artist in this back-to-back club was its charter member, Tiffany. “I Think We’re Alone Now,” a cover of Tommy James and The Shondells’ 1967 hit, was the Norwalk, California native’s first trip to the top, spending two weeks there in November 1987. Her second single, the ballad “Could’ve Been,” then enjoyed a two-week stay in the pop penthouse in February 1988.
Readers of a certain age will recall that Tiffany promoted her eponymous debut album by touring shopping malls across America. The “I Think We’re Alone Now” video captures that so-very-Eighties experience, featuring footage of the flame-haired singer holding center court near Cutlery World:
(Anyone else having flashbacks to high school dances?)
Following “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “Could’ve Been,” Tiffany had just two more top ten singles (“I Saw Him Standing There” and “All This Time”). She continues to record today, finding some success on the club charts, and also lampooned her teen-pop stardom with an appearance last year on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, backing up Robin Sparkles.
