From ‘Diva’ To ‘Shining’ Star

February 6, 2009 0 Comments

Originally scheduled for release last September, The Annie Lennox Collection comes out February 17. The set was put on hold when Lennox underwent spinal surgery to repair a impinged nerve.

In November, the Eurythmics lead singer and solo artist appeared on the American Music Awards to accept an Award of Merit. Treating the audience to a heartrending performance of “Why” (accompanying herself on piano), Lennox reminded us why hers is one of music’s greatest voices.

The Annie Lennox Collection begins with “Little Bird,” taken from her solo debut, Diva. Sixteen years ago, the song was perched at #71 on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually reaching a criminally low #49 (the “Little Bird” remixes, however, nested at #1):

Lennox’s 14-song retrospective closes with “Shining Light,” one of two new recordings and the set’s first single. “I first discovered this song by Ash about six years ago, and I simply couldn’t stop listening to it,” she says. “It’s so exultant that it virtually shimmers.”

While “Little Bird” featured actors dressed up as previous Lennox personas, the “Shining Light” video has the singer playing every roles in her all-girl band. It’s a lovely song, and the 54-year-old Lennox looks amazing:
