This week in 1986, Janet Jackson’s “Nasty” reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s one rung higher than “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” the first single from her breakthrough album, Control, and and the second of five to reach the top 5. The sixth single, “The Pleasure Principle,” topped out at a disappointing #14 the following spring.
But “Nasty” arrived just as the summer of 1986 was heating up. With school out and with more time on my hands, I was in hot pursuit of more music and more Janet, so soon “Nasty” became the second 12″ single I ever bought. (Madonna’s “Angel,” which featured the otherwise unavailable “Into The Groove” on the flip, was the first, purchased the previous summer.)
Pulling out that same “Nasty” 12″ single from my collection today, I noticed that the Extended Mix is just six minutes in length, only a third longer than the album version. But 27 years ago, even a little more “Nasty” is all I needed. Thanks to Janet, I learned to like this, obsessively seeking out dance remixes from more of my favorites.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, there was another 12″ single for “Nasty” featuring an entirely different remix. The Cool Summer Mix is more of a total revamp than the Extended Mix I was familiar with, and was later released on Control: The Remixes (though only the UK version included both parts).
Alas, the Extended Mix isn’t otherwise available, but you can purchase or stream the Cool Summer Mix (in two parts) via your preferred service.
