On this date in 1990, Janet Jackson played the first night on her 120-date Rhythm Nation 1814 World Tour, opening her show at the now-demolished Miami Arena in Miami, Florida. Of my life’s regrets, not attending Jackson’s first-ever tour is both small and significant.
I nearly had free seats. Calling into a Chicago radio station contest, I was given a choice between tickets to Janet’s concert and Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour. There really was no question. I opted for the Madonna tickets.
But a few days later, on another radio station, I won a second pair of Madonna tickets and her I’m Breathless CD. Had I known I was on one of my occasional winning streaks — I had a dialing method down pat, securing music, T-shirts, and cash — I would have jumped on Miss Janet the first time through.
Over two decades later, Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour remains the best concert experience of my life. A close friend of mine and her sister got to enjoy it as well, thanks to the extra pair of tickets I’d won. But I still wish I’d seen Janet live that year.
The Rhythm Nation 1814 tour has never been released on video or DVD, though the May 18, 1990 show in Tokyo was filmed and shown on Japanese television. Thanks to the power of YouTube, here’s a playlist of the full concert in its low-quality glory (including Janet’s custom ads for Japan Airlines):
