This week finds Katy Perry riding high on her “Teenage Dream.” The title track and second single from her sophomore album has reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, ending the seven-week run enjoyed by Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. “Teenage Dream” marks the second consecutive chart topper for Perry, as previous single “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg) claimed the pinnacle for six weeks earlier this summer.
According to the folks over at Billboard magazine who have the fun job of checking the charts and compiling fun historical tidbits like this one, Perry’s achievement marks the first time in 17 years that a song with “dream” in its title has reigned supreme on the Hot 100. “Teenage Dream” is the seventh entry on a list of such songs that stretches back to 1967:
1967 – The Monkees – “Daydream Believer”
1977 – Fleetwood Mac – “Dreams”
1983 – Eurythmics – “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”
1986 – Heart – “These Dreams”
1988 – Billy Ocean – “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”
1993 – Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover”
2010 – Katy Perry – “Teenage Dream”
Not only have 17 years passed since Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover” went to #1, but her song actually began its impressive 8-week run in the top spot this very same week in 1993. The first release from Music Box became Carey’s seventh consecutive #1 single. Starting with “Someday,” from her 1990 debut, I’ve always preferred the beats over the balladeering when it comes to Carey, and sporting a chunky jeep-beat courtesy of co-writer and producer Dave “Jam” Hall, “Dreamlover” continued that streak as well:
Seems that Bruce Springsteen liked the stomping drum of “Dreamlover” too, sampling the track for his song “Let’s Be Friends (Skin To Skin),” from 2002’s The Rising. (Who knew The Boss sampled anything ever, let alone Sony labelmate Mariah Carey?)
