On the occasion of the calendar reading 11-11-11, Billboard.com has posted a feature of 11 songs that peaked at #11. It’s always surprising to discover (or rediscover) that songs like Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win),” Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record),” and Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want To Wait,” which continue to enjoy great popularity all these years later, were unable to crack the top ten.
It’s not a comprehensive list, of course, as there are many more than 11 songs in Hot 100 history that have similarly been stuck on the outside looking in. One of them is Madonna‘s “The Power Of Good-Bye,” the third single from 1998’s Ray Of Light and her 37th to reach the top 20.
Besides the song’s chart performance tie to today’s date, “The Power Of Good-Bye” merits a timely mention because Madonna’s has re-teamed with Ray Of Light producer William Orbit for a new disc due next year. (You might already have heard a little something from that effort, the bouncy “Give Me All Your Love,” which leaked earlier this week.)
Oddly, and even more embarrassing to admit as a long-time Madonna fan, I don’t think I’d ever seen the music video for “The Power Of Good-Bye” until today. Directed by Matthew Rolston, the clip co-stars Goran Visnjic, who joined the cast of ER the following year, replacing George Clooney as County General’s resident heartthrob. Hello, “Good-Bye.”
