On Tuesday, the Go-Go’s released a remastered, expanded edition of their 1981 debut, Beauty And The Beat. In addition to the 11-track original album (which shaped my very existence), the deluxe set includes a live concert recording from an August 1981 gig at Boston’s Metro Club. It’s also been pressed in hot-pink vinyl.
Last summer, the Go-Go’s had scheduled a farewell tour, which was cancelled before it began after rhythm guitarist/vocalist Jane Wiedlin took a tumble during a hike and needed knee surgery. But in a silver-lining turn of events, the time-off gave the ladies a chance to reassess their plan, and the Go-Go’s decided they weren’t ready to say goodbye just yet. With 2011 marking their 30th anniversary together, the Ladies Gone Wild tour was born, which kicks off next Friday in Las Vegas.
Wiedlin, who turned 53 today, co-wrote “Our Lips Are Sealed,” the first single from Beauty And The Beat, with Terry Hall of Fun Boy Three (whose group would later also record the song). Though “Our Lips Are Sealed” only reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1981, a surprising stat considering the song’s iconic status today, it spent a total of 30 weeks on the chart. (“We Got The Beat” became a #2 hit the following spring.)
On Tuesday, the Go-Go’s will perform on the Dancing With The Stars season finale (ABC, 9/8c), their first television performance together in five years (though the DWTS stage is quite familiar to Belinda Carlisle). In August, they’ll receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That will be quite the moment for the quintet, whose rise began in L.A. as an all-female punk band who wrote and performed their own music.
Even better news for Go-Go’s fans, Wiedlin recently told Billboard that they “will have new music coming.” In fact, bandmates Charlotte Caffey and Kathy Valentine have already written a new song for the group.
