The One To Beat?

February 13, 2009 0 Comments

So ’80s pop star Belinda Carlisle is joining the next run of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, competing against the dimmed-wattage likes of Jewel, Lil’ Kim, Steve-O, and nine other “celebrities.” (Even Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak made the cut.)

Now I think I’ve watched a total of two episodes of DWTS in my life, much preferring the younger-skewing dance showcase, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance. But with the Go-Go’s frontwoman—a childhood crush—waltzing across the stage, I’ll set the TiVo and see whether my knees still get weak. (I don’t recall Carlisle doing any choreography in her career, let alone much dancing, but that’s basically the whole conceit of DWTS, right?)

This week in 1982, the Go-Go’s “We Got The Beat” was marching up the Billboard Hot 100 at #31. It was the second single from their debut, Beauty And The Beat, the first #1 album written and performed by an all-female band (and a six-week champ).

The most successful song of their career, “We Got The Beat” went on to reach #2, remaining there for three weeks:

Tune in for the premiere of Dancing With The Stars on Monday, March 9, at 8/7 Central, and see whether heaven is a ballroom on earth for Carlisle.
