Do we wanna see her do the shimmy again? Hell, yeah!
Rock/R&B icon Tina Turner announced a North American tour during an appearance on Thursday’s Oprah, ending her retirement from the road eight years ago. “After performing with Beyoncé at the Grammy Awards, the response was overwhelming,” Turner said. “Everywhere I went, people were asking me when I was going back on tour.”
In 2000, Turner had announced she would be hanging up her heels, saying at the time that she wanted to “go out on top.” According to Pollstar, her extended farewell was that year’s top concert draw, raking in $80 million.
Whatever ultimately inspired Turner to get those big wheels turning again, I’m one very happy guy. I thought I’d forever missed my chance to see those legendary gams in live action.
To celebrate the occasion, let’s cue up one of my all-time favorite tracks, “Better Be Good To Me,” which hit #5 in 1984. Fun fact—the fella who shares a moment with Tina mid-video is Cy Curnin of The Fixx:
The 68-year-old soul sister straps on the high heels this fall, starting with a stop in Kansas City. Tickets for Turner’s 17-city trek go on sale Monday, but thanks to an Oprah presale, I’ve already got mine.
