The Queen’s English

I admit I’m something of an Anglophile, enraptured with many things British (music and fashion top the list). But with the dollar-to-pound exchange rate stuck in such a sorry state, alas, I must be content to conduct much of my admiring from afar.

While online the other day, I stumbled upon a free outlet for my English affection. Though I don’t quite recall how I ended up on the Antiques Roadshow UK site (really, I don’t), it features a BritSpeak word game that challenges you to match English slang to its American counterpart.

I’ve since spent many minutes testing my knowledge of the “Mother Tongue.” You might already know a few words often spoken across the pond (“lift” means “elevator,” for example), but you’ll pick up a few British expressions that are fun to share with your mates (friends) on your way to the ATM (cashpoint). And have a jolly good time doing so, too.
