Adele’s domination

Hooray for Adele — she’s finally done it!

After spending two weeks as a lady-in-waiting frustratingly stuck behind Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” Adele has ascended to the top spot on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 with “Rolling In The Deep,” the Brit’s first visit to the penthouse spot. Released as a single last December (!), “Rolling In The Deep” has been steadily picking up steam, thanks in part to several television appearances (her own and via covers on American Idol and The Voice), which helped the song grow at radio and increase download sales (nearly 300K this week) — an impressive Cinderella story in our new-today-gone-tomorrow pop culture.

I’d say “Rolling In The Deep” has a good shot at sticking around on top for a second week, with a pair of starring roles on TV last night likely to provide a nice sales boost. On Glee‘s prom episode, “Rolling In The Deep” played out as a reunion between Lea Michele’s character Rachel Berry and Jonathan Groff’s Jesse St. James (some fans will look to buy the original track). Over on Dancing With The Stars results show, Adele joined the results show to perform the song, choreographed to a routine from So You Think You Can Dance alum, Travis Wall.

Adele had been scheduled to sing “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” on Dancing With The Stars as well, but had to skip out after straining her voice.

While she was understandably “gutted” about the cancellation, Adele’s got another reason to do a little dancing of her own (distractions from a greedy ex aside). Her album, 21, remains at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for a seventh non-consecutive week, holding off debuts from Beastie Boys, Jennifer Lopez, and Stevie Nicks. It’s the second-longest run atop the list for an album by a woman since 2000, with Taylor Swift’s 11-week reign in 2008-2009 with Fearless in front.

“Rolling In The Deep” isn’t done just yet, and Adele’s domination will only grow once second single “Someone Like You” gets its official moment in the spotlight.
