It’s “Drum Solo Week” on The Late Show with David Letterman, and on Tuesday night, Sheila E. stopped by the Ed Sullivan Theatre to show off her skills on the skins.
I hold a special place in my heart for female drummers: Sheila E., Gina Schock (The Go-Go’s), Patty Schemel (Hole), and Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson) all make it beat a little bit faster. Reviewing that lineup, it would seem that entry to that special place requires a “Sh” sound somewhere in their names, though I’d be remiss not to include Cindy Blackman.
In the first half of her Letterman performance, Sheila E. plays a bit of Latin jazz with Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra. But then she really pounds it out, briefly slowing the tempo to sing a snippet of “A Love Bizarre,” all while wearing a short dress and stilettos. Amazing.
