Who’s having the Best Week Ever?

March 24, 2011 0 Comments

You know, it’s really a shame that VH1 hasn’t resurrected its weekly pop-culture wrap-up show, Best Week Ever (now just a sad web shell of its former TV self). Because you know who’s having the Best Week Ever?

African drummers!

First, on last night’s American Idol, a trio of African drummers were featured during Naima’s performance of “Dancing In The Streets.” Note for the record that I haven’t say anything about her Motown Week performance, but am simply stating a fact about its participants. (However, I wouldn’t be surprised if she finds herself in tonight’s bottom three.)

Over on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Friendly Fires did Naima’s number one better, filling the stage with four African drummers who joined them on the London dance-rockers’ percussive new single “Live Those Days Tonight.”

Of course, any opportunity to see lead singer Ed MacFarlane’s dance this mess around must never be skipped. MacFarlane’s herky-jerky moves, which Spin has likened to Elaine Benes’ little kicks, are so lovably endearing. Particularly his shoulder throws.

Actually, “week” might be overstating things a bit, since I know of just those two TV appearances featuring African drummers (I try not to watch Dancing With The Stars and missed the Skins finale). So how ’bout we just say that African drummers were having the Best Wednesday Ever?
