Swedish Fish, Sprees, and Dots were among my favorite candy choices as a kid, but when I grew older they all came in second to Good ’n Fruity (the colorful, immensely more palatable sibling to the black-licorice Good ’n Plenty).
Purchasing candy only occasionally as an adult, I took Good ’n Fruity for granted. Like others who thought their favorites would forever be found on shelves, I assumed the chewy, fruity capsules had long since graduated to Classic Candy status. I was wrong.
Just about ten years ago, Hershey’s ceased the candy’s production. Good ’n Fruity was gone.
In the years since, I’ve made unsuccessful attempts to find a close cousin. Though fruit-flavored and capsule-shaped, Mike & Ikes were no match. Deprived of Good ’n Fruity, I sought solace in the Interwebs, where I discovered an online petition asking Hershey to revive the candy. I added my signature, and hoped the chocolate giant would reconsider its decision.
Joined by over 2500 signatures of Good ’n Fruity fans, today I’m one happy candy camper, as Hershey has finally resurrected the pink-boxed candy. Though this review suggests the formula has been changed, its writer admits to never having tried the original incarnation (so I’m openly optimistic that Good ’n Fruity has returned in full).
Now all I have to do is weigh whether I want to risk my orthodontia work to indulge in the fruits of Hershey’s labors. Because the return of Good & Fruity (note the new ampersand) is certainly worth celebrating, I think I’ll stockpile some boxes so I’ve got a supply to tear into when I’m good ‘n ready.
