Just yesterday, I was asked by a friend to compile a list of my five fave Christmas songs. Though I willfully ignored her max and returned instead with ten, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” secured a place in the top half. Whenever the “I wrapped it up and sent it / With a note saying, ‘I love you,’ I meant it” part hits, I’m sent soaring into blissed-out holiday heaven, even though “Last Christmas” has crushing heartbreak at its sweet sing-along center. I could listen endlessly.
So you could say that I’m the perfect audience for “George And Andrew,” a festive tale from a still-functioning British pop duo, Pete Hobbs and Jof Owen of The Boy Least Likely To, which imagines a Christmas Eve meet-up of former Wham!-mates George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. But it’s the video that really brings this fantastical musical reunion to life:
“George And Andrew” appears on The Boy Least Likely To’s Christmas Special, a new release featuring eight originals and three seasonal covers. Owen, who’s something of a Wham! fanatic, sat down with SPIN to discuss the song at length, an article that’s worth a read.
Hobbs and Owen haven’t made “George And Andrew” available as a free download, but the twee-pop duo do have two gifts to share from Christmas Special. First, there’s their own “Last Christmas”-like take on holiday heartbreak, “Christmas Isn’t Christmas,” and second, the super-joyful, Santa-believing, “Happy Christmas Baby.”
Free download of The Boy Least Likely To – “Christmas Isn’t Christmas” via Stereogum, and “Happy Christmas Baby” via the band’s website (scroll down for the box). The Boy Least Likely To’s Christmas Special is available via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
UPDATE (12/25): I’ve tracked down a third free download from Christmas Special, “Blue Spruce Needles,” via My Old Kentucky Blog.
