Boy George’s Church of the Positive Mind

June 18, 2011 0 Comments

It certainly wasn’t a plan to feature two Boy George-related dance tunes in a row, but perhaps that’s all a bit of Saturdance destiny at play.

Chris Malinchak’s “The Fourth” sampled the chords and backing vocals from Culture Club’s 1983 song, “Victims,” while this week brings something new from Boy George himself, though again he’s nowhere to be heard on the track.

Forming the dance triumvirate Funkysober with fellow DJ/producers Marc Vedo and Darren Tate (aka DT8), “Sunshine Into My Life” is an uplifting gospel-house number, a dance music genre for which I’ve previously declared my love.

Brimming with positivity, the song’s inspirational vocals are by Sharlene Hector, whom some might remember from a 2004 Coca-Cola commercial in which she sings Nina Simone’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,” while passing out bottles of the carbonated beverage to passersby. Hector has also worked with Reel People and Basement Jaxx, and released her debut solo EP in March.

The radiating light-infused groove of “Sunshine Into My Life” is irresistible:

But there’s even more to praise to heap upon Mark Vedo’s Tribal Mix, featuring additional heavenly testimony from Hector, a bouncy beat, and even some acoustic guitar.
