For Peter Rauhofer, No Big Whoop

July 21, 2012 0 Comments

After a few weeks’ wait, remixes of Kylie Minogue’s “Timebomb” were released this week.

The six-track package collects remixes by Peter Rauhofer, DADA, Steve Redant & Phil Romano, Style Of Eye, and Italia3, plus an extended mix that clocks in at about 90 seconds over the single version. Like any good release targeting dance fans, there’s something to meet disparate musical styles and tastes.

My “Timebomb” remix pick is the Peter Rauhofer Club Mix. Going for a minimalist, progressive feel, the New York City based DJ/producer boldly edits out the exuberant “Whoop!” in the song’s chorus. While some consider his subtraction sacrilege, it’s really no cause for alarm. Adding, subtracting, slicing, and dicing is all part of remixer’s job.

Rauhofer, who has remixed Minogue before (listen here and here), reliably wrings out a deeper vibe from what began as an electropop song. Plus, I imagine when his mix of “Timebomb” is spun live, the crowd on the floor will reinsert the missing “Whoop!” unprompted. Rauhofer’s been in the game long enough to know exactly how to get the boys going.

Rauhofer also handed in a Big Room Mix of “Timebomb,” which did not make the official release. Minogue’s U.S. label, Astralwerks, offered this second mix earlier this week as a limited free download, but now you’ll have to make do with listening to what you missed. Still no big “Whoop!” on Rauhofer’s even darker tinged, hypnotic take:

Other remixes forthcoming from Peter Rauhofer include Madonna’s “I’m Addicted,” Gossip’s “Get A Job,” and his own club cover of David Guetta’s “The World Is Mine.”
