The Tracks Of Freemasons’ Tears

August 24, 2013 0 Comments

After with the techy “Bring It Back” earlier this year, Freemasons have followed up with “Tears,” a disco-house track that fans of the Brighton duo will find much more familiar.

“Tears” also represents Russell Small and James Wiltshire’s reunion with vocalist Katherine Ellis, whom they last collaborated with on 2008’s “When You Touch Me.”

First previewed last December, “Tears” not-so-subtly twists a lyric from Prince’s “Purple Rain” for its main hook (“pain” becomes “shame”). Ellis’ background vocals also reach back to the past, albeit a little further, with her “mmm’s” a close cousin to the intro of the 1975 disco classic, “The Hustle.”

Though there’s much to enjoy about the original mix, the Futureretro Club Mix is really fantastic. Missing from the preview, and really only present on the Radio Edit, Freemasons make the brass shine even more brilliantly.
