“Revolver,” the other new song on Madonna‘s recent hits collection, Celebration, was finally issued as a CD single this week (rare, but the format still exists). The 8-track package, which consists of six remixes of “Revolver” and two of “Celebration,” has been available digitally since Christmas Day, but being the Madonna completist that I am, I waited for the physical release to speak of it here.
“Revolver” marks Madonna’s final single under her contract with Warner Bros. Records, and I’m happy to see them part ways because the label has had such a long history of mucking things up, remix-wise. Releases were delayed if not eventually cancelled, brilliant club rubs were designated as DJ-only, while others were relegated to bootleg status. And with “Revolver,” Warner Bros. misfires yet again, releasing only what amounts to a dub from Tracy Young — the “Shoot To Kill Remix” — rather than the full-on vocal mix Madonna fans would kill for (one that I’ve read exists).
For a decade, Young has reworked Madonna’s music for the dancefloor, a history that began with three singles from 2000’s Music (“Music,” “Don’t Tell Me,” and “What It Feels Like For A Girl”). Her take on “Revolver” is my favorite of the bunch, though David Guetta’s remix frustratingly remains stuck in my head. Young’s “Shoot To Kill Remix” doesn’t break any new ground, but this sort of dense, take-no-prisoners club sound has always found favor with me. Hear here:
