Mariah’s Triumphant Return To Clubland

August 18, 2012 1 Comment

Mariah Carey‘s new single, “Triumphant (Get ‘Em),” has so far proved to be anything but. Selling just 23,000 downloads in its first week, the returning diva fell short of debuting on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written and produced with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael-Cox, the song appears ahead of Carey’s 14th studio album, due next year.

I was disappointed with “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” upon first spin, tweeting that Carey had been puzzlingly been relegated to backseat status on her own headlining single. Only singing the hook and some backgrounds, she puzzlingly ceded the spotlight to the song’s ‘featured’ rappers, Rick Ross and Meek Mill, who dominate the track. Carey has said she approached the production with a desire for “the days when R&B records didn’t have to cross over,” and I second that emotion, but her remembrances of those bygone days are decidedly different than mine based on the resulting production.

Thankfully, “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” isn’t a complete loss for Carey’s dance/pop contingent, with her latest single getting the remix treatment. “To relive the splendor of when I used to rewrite+resing all my club mixes,” she tweeted, introducing the Vintage Throwback Remix.

With Carey’s words and the title conjuring her classic studio sessions with producer/DJ David Morales, I expected an approximation of that magic, but once again, my memories and Mariah’s are miles apart. The Vintage Throwback Remix is still a worthwhile rework, even if it’s not quite the ’90s piano house retrofest the title suggests. The additional background vocals, however, are spot on:

Released simultaneously, a second remix of “Triumphant (Get ‘Em),” the Pulse Club Mix, is phenomenal. I prefer my Mariah full-throated and backed by beats, and this re-rub of “Triumphant” absolutely delivers on those desires, with the production living up to the song’s theme. The Pulse Club Mix of “Triumphant” is my favorite Mariah Carey remix since the Cahill Club Mix of her 2009 single, “Obsessed.”

There are three more mixes of “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” as well, from Laidback Luke, The New Iberican League, and Danny Verde. Though these haven’t yet been made available for download, you can listen to them all via Mariah’s YouTube page.

Rescued by a robust set of rap-less remixes, “Triumphant (Get ‘Em),” should top the club chart in short order, just as Carey has done before (14 times by my count). If an edit of the Pulse Club Mix is serviced to radio stations, it might just drive “Triumphant” to the upper reaches of the Hot 100 too.
