Sending out an SOS

August 6, 2011 5 Comments

Earlier this week, Freemasons posted a free Summer ’11 mix on their Facebook page. Taking it for a spin at the gym yesterday, I nearly stopped my bike about 15 minutes in when thought I heard Deborah Cox (whom I adore). Checking the tracklisting online when I returned home, I discovered it wasn’t Cox (who does have something new on the way), but “SOS” by Ralph Good featuring Polina Griffith, released last month.

“SOS” actually dates back to 2004, produced and performed by Kazakhstan pop group A-Studio, also with Griffith on vocals. The song was subsequently remixed several times, gained some traction in clubs, and landed on a few compilations. Now seven years after “SOS” was first released, Ralph Good, formerly of Zurich-based DJ/production team The Good Guys, has re-recorded the track with Griffith, who returns for vocal duties.

For their Summer mixtape, Freemasons picked the rework of “SOS” by Richard Dinsdale that appears on the flip of the 12″. His orbiting Tanzanite Remix helped pull me in, but it’s Griffith’s soul-diva vocals that remain the real draw. Hear here:
