She’s Leaving, Holmes

As an R&B song, “Epiphany (I’m Leaving)” by Chrisette Michele doesn’t break new topical ground. It’s nearly all right there in the title: She’s freeing herself from some good-for-nothing guy, finally having had enough of him steppin’ out on her.

Singers and songwriters return to this thematic well again and again, decade after decade, so I’m often more interested to hear the club mixes. On the dance floor, these mini-dramas about newly independent women often fare well. Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay” and Regina Belle’s “I’ve Had Enough” are two of a similar stripe that immediately spring to mind.

Though Chrisette Michele’s “Epiphany (I’m Leaving)” peaked at #32 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart last week, her hopeful take on a somebody-done-somebody-wrong song (written by Ne-Yo) is still worth mentioning because Dave Audé’s club mix is one of his best. I particularly love the repeated piano chords reminiscent of Angelo Badalamenti’s “Twin Peaks Theme.”
